Athens with kids: the Acropolis, an island day and an easy city

Athens works with kids when you keep the day simple: one big sight in the morning, one easy thing in the afternoon. Here is what things cost in 2026, what to book before you fly, and the 3-day plan that fits a family.

Editor's pick: Acropolis, Parthenon and Acropolis Museum guided tour on GetYourGuide

The one booking that shapes the hardest day: a licensed guide who keeps kids moving through the site, then continues with you in the museum. Entry tickets are separate - buy them from the Ministry of Culture's official ticket site before you fly.

The big morning: the Acropolis

Do the Acropolis first, at the 8:00 opening or as close to it as you can. By late morning the rock is hot, crowded and slippery - the marble under the Propylaea is polished smooth by millions of shoes, and it is genuinely slick even in dry weather. Closed shoes with grip are the single most useful thing you pack for this day.

Strollers are not allowed up on the rock, so small children go up in a carrier. Buy timed-entry tickets ahead from the Ministry of Culture's official site, tickets.hh.gr: €30 full price, €15 reduced, free for children under 6 and for EU visitors under 25. In 2026 the €30 price holds year-round - there is no longer a cheaper winter ticket.

With kids, plan on 90 minutes to two hours up top, not the four-hour history version. The Parthenon is the anchor; the Erechtheion's caryatid porch is the detail children actually remember. Then come down and let the museum do the teaching in air-conditioned comfort.

The Acropolis Museum: the second half of the morning

The museum sits at the foot of the rock, ten minutes on foot from the Acropolis exit. General admission is €20, reduced €10, booked on the museum's official site. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery lines the sculptures up with the real building through the glass - the moment the morning clicks for kids who were dragging their feet on the rock. The glass floor over the excavation at the entrance is the other hit: ruins under your shoes, no climbing required.

The easy afternoon: Plaka, Anafiotika and the guard change

Plaka is the old neighborhood under the Acropolis - mostly pedestrian lanes, souvenir shops, and tavernas where nobody minds children. Above it hides Anafiotika, a tiny whitewashed village built by islanders in the 19th century: stairs, cats and bougainvillea, and the closest thing to a Cycladic alley without leaving Athens. It is a 20-minute wander, free, and steep enough that carriers beat strollers again.

For a flat hour, the National Garden next to Syntagma Square gives you shade, a playground and room to run. Pair it with the changing of the guard in front of the parliament: the Evzones march out in front of the tomb of the unknown soldier every hour on the hour, and the full ceremony with the whole unit happens on Sundays at 11:00. Kids who find museums hard will watch every second of this.

Two more stops kids rate highly

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. A free park on the coast side of the city: a long canal with dancing fountains, lawns, playgrounds and room for bikes and scooters. Come in the late afternoon and stay for the fountain show after dark.

Mount Lycabettus. The highest point in central Athens, with a funicular that saves little legs the climb. Go near sunset for the view over the whole basin to the sea, then dinner back in the center.

Day trips: sunset at Sounion or three islands in a day

Cape Sounion is the temple on the cliff at the edge of Attica, about 90 minutes from the center. The Temple of Poseidon at sunset is the postcard of the Athens Riviera. Entry is €20 full, €10 reduced, and in 2026 tickets are sold on site only. An organized sunset trip handles the driving and the timing, which is exactly the part that is hard with kids.

The Saronic islands cruise is the other classic: a full-day boat from the Athens coast to Hydra, Poros and Aegina, with lunch on board. Hydra is the one children talk about afterward - no cars at all, donkeys and boats instead. It is a long day, so pick it for the day after a light one.

The 3-day Athens plan with kids

Day 1. Acropolis at 8:00, down by 10:30, Acropolis Museum before lunch. Rest at the hotel, then an easy evening in Plaka.

Day 2. Guard change at Syntagma on the hour, the National Garden, then Anafiotika and Plaka lanes. Late afternoon at the Niarchos Center for the fountains.

Day 3. Choose your day trip: Sounion for the sunset temple, or the three-island cruise for the boat day. If you have a fourth day, Lycabettus and a slow museum morning.

Where to stay with kids in Athens

Base yourself around Syntagma, Plaka or the Acropolis Museum area. Everything in this guide is then walkable or one metro stop away, the airport metro line ends at Syntagma, and you can always get back to the room for the midday break that keeps the trip working.

Electra Metropolis Athens sits between Syntagma and Plaka, with a rooftop pool that looks straight at the Acropolis - the end-of-day reward that sells the whole trip to kids. AthensWas stands on the pedestrian promenade by the Acropolis Museum, so the morning starts with a flat five-minute walk. Both list family rooms on their official sites; dates, prices and cancellation terms are shown on the hotel pages.

Practical notes

Heat. From April to October, plan the outdoor sight for the morning and keep midday for the museum, the pool or a nap. November to March is mild and far less crowded, with shorter opening hours.

Getting around. Metro line 3 runs directly from the airport to Syntagma. Inside the center you will mostly walk; taxis are easy to find for the tired-leg evenings.

Food. Tavernas are relaxed about children and dinner starts late by northern standards. Souvlaki, grilled chicken, fries and horiatiki salad cover even cautious eaters.

Frequently asked questions

Is Athens good with kids?

Yes, if you keep the day simple. One big sight in the morning, one easy thing in the afternoon. The center is walkable, the metro covers the airport line, and Greeks are relaxed about children in tavernas late into the evening.

How many days in Athens with kids?

Three full days is the sweet spot: one for the Acropolis and its museum, one for Plaka, the guard change and the National Garden, and one for a day trip - sunset at Cape Sounion or a boat day to the Saronic islands.

Can I bring a stroller to the Acropolis?

Strollers are not allowed up on the rock. Bring a baby carrier for small children. The marble is polished smooth and slippery, so closed shoes with grip matter more than anything else you pack that day.

Where is the best area to stay in Athens with kids?

Base yourself around Syntagma, Plaka or the Acropolis museum area. You can walk to almost everything, the airport metro stops at Syntagma, and you are never far from a break back at the hotel.
