Quick answer: is Cancun good for families over Christmas and New Year?

Yes, if you book early and plan around the crowds. December brings daytime highs around 81°F (27°C), sea temperatures around 81.7°F (27.6°C) and less rain than the autumn months. The trade-offs are peak-season hotel rates, full resorts, and gala dinners that need to be reserved. Families who lock in the room and the key bookings early get the easiest beach weather of the year in return.

Pack light layers for the evenings; days are pool weather.

Crowds and prices in the holiday weeks

The Christmas to New Year stretch is one of the busiest periods of the year in Cancun's Hotel Zone. Resorts run close to full, and the published rates for these dates are among the year's highest. Exact prices move daily, so compare current rates for your specific dates rather than relying on any fixed number.

What this means in practice: the room categories that go first are the ones families need - suites that sleep four or five, connecting rooms, and rooms near the kids' club or the quiet pool. If your dates are fixed, the room is the first thing to lock.

What to book early

In order of what sells out first:

  • Family rooms and suites. The large-room inventory at the family resorts is limited and goes first for the holiday weeks.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners. Most resorts run special holiday dinners or galas; some include them for guests, some charge extra, and the popular seatings fill up. Check your hotel's own holiday program after booking the room.
  • Airport transfers. A pre-booked transfer saves the taxi line with tired kids on the busiest arrival days of the year.
  • Popular day trips. Boat tours and the headline archaeological sites run at capacity over the holidays.

Things to do with kids over the holidays

Beach and pool days in the Hotel Zone. With sea temperatures around 81.7°F (27.6°C) and daytime highs of 81°F (27°C), the beach is the main event. Mornings are calmer and better for young swimmers.

Isla Mujeres day trip. The public Ultramar ferry runs from Puerto Juarez in central Cancun and from Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol in the Hotel Zone. Children are priced by height, not age: infants up to 12 months travel free with a boarding pass, a child from 1 year up to 1.20 m pays the child fare, and over 1.20 m pays the adult fare. Tickets are non-refundable, so buy for the day you mean to go. Our ferry vs boat tour guide compares the options with the full rules.

Chichen Itza as the big day out. The famous site is a 12-hour day from Cancun with a young-kid trade-off - read the honest version in our Chichen Itza with kids guide before committing a holiday day to it.

Where to stay with kids

For an all-inclusive built for families, the Hyatt Ziva Cancun publishes 547 suites, a KidZ Club for ages 4 to 12 with a mini water park, and three infinity pools; it holds a Tripadvisor rating of 4.6 out of 5 from 15,068 reviews (checked 8 October 2026). Our Hyatt Ziva guide has the full room-by-room check.

Comparing resorts? The Cancun all-inclusive kids club comparison lines up the published kids-club ages and water parks, and the Cancun with a baby or toddler guide covers what resorts offer under kids-club age.
