How to choose your area

Samui is compact, so the choice is about pace more than logistics. Bophut (Fisherman's Village) is calm and walkable, with a gentle beach and evening street food. Chaweng is the island's center: the most restaurants, shops and beach energy, still family-friendly at its quieter northern end. Choeng Mon and Plai Laem in the northeast are small, pretty and quiet. Wherever you stay, nothing on the island is more than a short drive away, and our Koh Samui with babies and toddlers guide explains what to check before you book any resort.

The mid-range favorite: Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach

This is the resort we know best: we stayed here with our kids and it delivers exactly what a family needs. Beachfront on Bophut Beach with about 200 rooms, it publishes family rooms with a bunk bed and a two-bedroom suite of 63 square metres (one king and two twin beds). The jungle-themed Jungle's Book Kids Club is free for hotel guests up to age 12 and open 9:00-21:00 (with a one-hour cleaning break at 17:00); children under 4 join with a parent or babysitter, and babysitting is available. Add a splash pad, a Kids Stay and Eat Free program under Holiday Inn policies, and optional paid activities like pizza making and Thai dessert cooking, and you have the easiest family base on the island. Our full Holiday Inn Samui review has the details.

The upper-mid option: Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort

At the quieter northern end of Chaweng, Anantara Lawana lists a kids club for ages 4-12 (under 4 with a parent or nanny) and kids' sports activities such as boxing and yoga classes with certified in-house staff. You get Chaweng's restaurants and shops within easy reach while staying on its calmest stretch of beach. Hours for the kids club are not stated on the hotel's family page, so confirm them with the resort when you book.

The luxury retreat: Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

On a quiet bay on the northwest coast, Four Seasons runs the complimentary Kids For All Seasons program for ages 4-12, open 9:00-18:00 with a one-hour break at noon; children under 4 join with a parent or guardian. Thai cooking classes are available on request for children from age 5, for a fee. This is the splurge pick: villa living, serious service, and a kids program that lets parents actually use the spa.

Questions

Which area of Koh Samui is best for families?

For most families it is Bophut or Choeng Mon: calm water, a relaxed pace and resorts built around children. Chaweng has the most restaurants and shops and the liveliest beach. The island is small enough that no base is more than a short drive from the others.

Do Koh Samui family hotels have rooms for more than three people?

Yes. Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach lists family rooms with a bunk bed and a 63 square metre two-bedroom suite with one king and two twin beds, and its Kids Stay and Eat Free program applies under Holiday Inn policies.

Are kids clubs at Koh Samui resorts free?

At the resorts we checked, the kids club itself is complimentary for hotel guests. Some optional activities, such as cooking or crafts, may carry a fee at certain resorts.

When is the best season for a Koh Samui family trip?

Samui's weather runs on a different rhythm from Thailand's Andaman coast, so check the seasons in our Thailand in December and January guide for the month-by-month picture.
