Where to stay in Koh Samui with kids: the four areas compared

Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut and Maenam suit very different families. Here is what each area is actually like, where the airport is, and a family stay in each, from official sources checked 21 October 2026.

Quick pick: Bophut for most families, Maenam for toddlers, Chaweng for teens

Bophut pairs a gentle beach with walkable dinners at Fisherman's Village. Maenam is the quietest of the four. Chaweng has the most going on, and Lamai gives a similar beach with fewer crowds.

Quick answer: the best Samui area by family type

  • Toddlers and preschoolers: Maenam, or Bophut if you want evening strolls. Both are calm and low-key, and the airport sits in Bo Phut itself.
  • School-age kids: Bophut. Fisherman's Village gives you car-free evening dinners, and our family's favorite kids-club resort is on this beach.
  • Teens: Chaweng. The liveliest beach, the most restaurants and shops, and everything within walking distance.

Chaweng: everything on your doorstep

Chaweng is Samui's main resort town: the longest, liveliest beach, plus the malls, clinics, pharmacies and restaurants that make a family trip easy. The Tourism Authority of Thailand highlights Hat Chaweng for swimming and sunbathing. The trade-off is noise and traffic behind the beach, and a party scene in the central stretch at night.

What to check: which stretch your hotel sits on. The northern end is calmer while keeping Chaweng's restaurants and shops within easy reach.

Family stays we have verified: Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort sits on Chaweng's quieter northern end with a kids club for ages 4-12 (from the hotel's official site). See our Koh Samui family hotels guide for the full fact sheet.

Lamai: Chaweng's calmer neighbor

Lamai is the island's second beach area, south of Chaweng on the east coast, and TAT lists Hat Lamai among Samui's highlights. It runs on a smaller, more relaxed scale, and prices tend to be gentler. Banyan Tree Samui, which keeps a private bay in Lamai, puts itself 5 km from Lamai's main area and 15 km from Chaweng's, which gives a feel for the distances.

What to check: evenings are quiet outside the center, and you will use taxis more than in Chaweng. Agree the fare before you set off; TAT advises negotiating taxi and tuk-tuk fares in advance.

Family stays we have verified: Banyan Tree Samui is an all-pool-villa resort on a private hill above Lamai Bay, with a 50-metre main pool, a kids' pool, a kids club for ages 4-12 and babysitting with advance notice (from the hotel's official site).

Bophut and Fisherman's Village: dinners on foot

Bophut, on the north coast, has the most character of Samui's beach areas. TAT singles out Fisherman's Village for its converted old Chinese shophouses, now restaurants and cafes along the beachfront. In our own coverage we found Bophut calm and walkable, with a gentle beach and evening street food, and it is the area we recommend first for young families. Samui Airport's official address is in Bo Phut, so transfers are the shortest on the island.

What to check: the beach is pleasant rather than spectacular, and the swimming is calmer but shallower than the east coast. For late-night buzz you will taxi to Chaweng.

Family stays we have verified: Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach is the resort we know best: family rooms with bunk beds, a free kids club and a splash pad, from the hotel's official site. Our Holiday Inn Samui with young kids guide has the details. Also nearby in Choeng Mon, five minutes from the airport: Kimpton Kitalay Samui, with its 500 sq m JUNIO kids club.

Maenam: the quiet one

West of Bophut on the north coast, Maenam is long, calm and low-key: a real beach village behind the sand, quiet evenings and space to breathe. It suits families with small children and longer stays, and it is where you feel the island slow down. Nightlife means a taxi to Bophut or Chaweng, which is exactly why families pick it.

What to check: you will rely on taxis or a rental more than in Bophut. TAT's motorbike warning for Samui is blunt: accidents are common, so helmets always, and never ride after drinking.

Family stays we have verified: Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui sits on the island's quiet northwest coast with the complimentary Kids For All Seasons program for ages 4-12 (from the hotel's official site). See our Samui resorts with kids clubs comparison for the full table.

Villa or resort?

With kids, a resort usually wins: kids clubs, lifeguarded pools and breakfast you do not cook. A villa makes sense for a longer stay, two families traveling together, or grandparents along, when a kitchen and a private pool beat the kids club. If a villa fits, browse Koh Samui villas on Vrbo and filter for your beach area using the map above. If a resort fits, start with the comparison table.

When to go

Samui's rainy season does not follow Phuket's. In the Thai Meteorological Department's 30-year climate normals for the Koh Samui station, November is by far the wettest month (about 445 mm), October and December stay wet, and February is the driest. June to August are relatively dry, which makes Samui a summer option when the Andaman coast is at its wettest. Our Thailand in December and January with kids guide unpacks the season, and the Bangkok and Koh Samui itinerary shows how we timed our own trip.

For days between beach days, browse Samui tours and activities on GetYourGuide, including boat trips to Ang Thong National Marine Park, which TAT calls out as the classic day trip from Samui.

Questions

Which part of Koh Samui is best for families?

For most families, Bophut: a gentle beach, walkable evening dinners at Fisherman's Village, the shortest airport transfers, and family resorts we have verified on the beach. With toddlers who need real quiet, look at Maenam. With teens, look at Chaweng.

Is Chaweng or Bophut better with young kids?

Bophut, for most young families. Chaweng is easier for supplies and has the liveliest beach, but it is noisier and busier behind the sand. Bophut trades that convenience for calmer evenings and still keeps restaurants on foot.

When is the rainy season in Koh Samui?

October to December, peaking in November, per the Thai Meteorological Department's 30-year normals for the Koh Samui station. That is later than Phuket and Krabi, whose wettest months fall earlier in the year.

Do we need a car in Koh Samui?

Not if you stay in Chaweng or Bophut and plan mostly beach days. Taxis and hotel transfers cover airport runs and day trips; TAT advises agreeing taxi fares before departure. For the quiet south and west coasts, your own transport helps.

Keep planning

Once you have your area, pick the stay: Samui resorts with kids clubs compared, three family hotels by budget, Holiday Inn Samui with young kids, and a Thai cooking class with hotel pickup for a non-beach day. All our Thailand guides sit on the Thailand hub.
