Two Weeks in Thailand With Kids: Bangkok and Koh Samui

Two weeks split between Bangkok and Koh Samui is close to the perfect family trip to Thailand: three or four days of temples, markets and street food in the city, then a short flight south to slow beach days. This is the trip we did with our kids, what it looked like day to day, and the beachfront resort on Chaweng we keep recommending to friends.

Editor's pick: Banana Fan Sea Resort on Expedia

Beachfront on Chaweng Beach with a kids' pool, tropical gardens and everything within walking distance - our recommendation for families on Koh Samui.

First stop: Bangkok (3-4 days)

Bangkok with kids works if you pace it: one big thing per day, pool time in the hot afternoon, and street food at night.

  • Mornings at the temples. In Bangkok the Grand Palace and Wat Pho are the classic pair (dress code: shoulders and knees covered).
  • Nights in Yaowarat. Chinatown after dark is neon, wok fire and the best cheap eating in the city. The kids still talk about it.
  • The hotel view. Waking up to the Bangkok skyline from a high floor became its own morning ritual.

The flight south

Bangkok Airways flies direct to Samui in about an hour. Samui Airport is an open-air garden terminal - the kids thought we had landed in a resort, not an airport. Fixed-price taxi counter on arrival, and you are on the beach by lunch.

Koh Samui: where we stayed

Our recommendation, without hesitation: Banana Fan Sea Resort on Chaweng Beach. Beachfront with soft white sand, an infinity pool plus a separate kids' pool, tropical gardens, and everything on Chaweng within walking distance. It is the rare resort that works equally well for a five-year-old and for parents who want a quiet dinner by the water.

What beach days actually looked like

  • Slow mornings under the palms. The walkway from the resort area to the beach, frangipani and palm overhead, is the walk we did every single day.
  • Lunch with feet in the sand. Fisherman's Village in Bophut has 40+ restaurants along the water; a daybed by the bay turned into a whole afternoon.
  • Dinner at a beach restaurant. Tables on the sand, string lights, a full moon over the water, kids running between the tables. These were the evenings of the trip.

The day trips worth the effort

  • Wat Plai Laem: a lakeside temple complex with a giant 18-arm statue and a green Indra figure the kids circled twice. Free, colorful, and zero queue.
  • Longtail boats on a calm bay: shallow, glassy water and painted boats - the quiet side of Samui most people skip.

What we would tell any family going

  1. Split the trip: city first, island second. Ending on the beach is the right order.
  2. One activity per day in Bangkok. The heat does the scheduling for you.
  3. Stay beachfront on Samui. With kids, walking to dinner on the sand beats any taxi plan.
  4. Book tours online, not at the gate - the price gap is real.
  5. August worked for us: some rain, short bursts, fewer crowds, lower prices.

What it all costs

The question everyone asks next is the budget. We priced the whole route - hotels, food, activities and local transport - with current October 2026 numbers here: what two weeks in Thailand with kids actually costs.

Questions

Is Bangkok or Koh Samui better with kids?

Do both. Bangkok is the adventure - temples, markets, street food - and Koh Samui is the rest. Three or four days in the city, then fly south for beach days.

How many days do you need for Thailand with kids?

Two weeks works well: 3-4 days in Bangkok and about 10 on Koh Samui. Less than a week feels rushed once you add the flight south.

Is August a good time for Thailand with kids?

It worked for us: some rain in short bursts, fewer crowds and lower prices. Pack for showers and plan pool time in the hot afternoon.
