The week's route. Schematic, not to scale.

Days 1-2: Cancun base

Fly into Cancun, settle into the Hotel Zone and keep these two days slow: pool, beach and early nights. Cancun works as the family base for the north half of the week because Isla Mujeres and the Chichen Itza tours all start here, and the widest choice of family resorts sits on this strip. Our Cancun with a baby or toddler guide covers resorts, babysitting and what to pack for the youngest travelers, and the kids-club comparison helps if you want a resort with a club for ages 4 and up.

If you want a resort with a published kids program from day one, Hyatt Ziva Cancun and Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun are the two we checked in detail, with the specifics in our Hyatt Ziva with kids guide.

Day 3: Isla Mujeres

An easy island day. Ultramar ferries run to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juarez in Cancun center and from Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol in the Hotel Zone, and the operator prices children by height: infants up to 12 months travel free with a boarding pass, a child from 1 year up to 1.20 m pays the child fare, and over 1.20 m pays the adult fare. Tickets are non-refundable but valid for six months, and the operator asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure. With younger kids the ferry plus golf-cart wandering is the calm option; with confident swimmers the catamaran adds snorkeling, and the listing we link sets a minimum age of 10 for snorkeling. Full details in our Cancun to Isla Mujeres with kids guide.

Day 4: Chichen Itza

The big culture day, about 2.5 hours each way by road, so a guided tour with hotel pickup earns its keep with kids. The essentials from the official channels: admission is the Boleto Unico sold only at the CATVI ticket office on arrival (no official online sale) at 697 MXN for foreign visitors, the site opens 08:00-17:00, and agencies receive preferential attention between 11:00 and 14:00, which is why tours aim for opening or mid-morning. Both tours below include pickup and free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and each pairs the ruins with a cenote swim, which is how you sell a ruins day to a 7-year-old. Every ticket rule, price and timing is in our Chichen Itza with kids guide.

Days 5-6: Tulum and the cenotes

Move about 2 hours south to Tulum on day 5 and keep the ruins for the afternoon or the next morning. Per INAH, the official Mexican archaeology institute, Tulum opens Monday to Sunday 08:00-17:00 with last entry at 15:30; admission is 210 MXN for foreign visitors and 105 MXN for Mexican nationals. Entry to the surrounding Parque del Jaguar is free per the Quintana Roo state government. The clifftop setting over the sea is the most photogenic ruin of the week, and the site is compact enough for shorter attention spans. No food is allowed in, so feed the kids first.

Day 6 is the cenote day. A cenote is a natural limestone sinkhole with clear fresh water, and the Tulum area is full of them. A guided half-day keeps it simple with kids: the cenote tour below runs about 4 hours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Day 7: buffer day

Keep the last day unplanned on purpose. It absorbs a rainy afternoon, a missed beach day or a child who needs one more pool morning, and it protects the drive back to Cancun airport (about 2 hours) from any schedule pressure. If everyone is still fresh, a second swim at a favorite beach beats one more attraction.

Getting around with kids: car, shuttle or tours

  • Tours with pickup cover the two long days (Chichen Itza, cenotes) with zero driving and free-cancellation flexibility. This is the low-stress default with young kids.
  • A rental car gives freedom for the Cancun-Tulum move and cenote hopping. Highway 307 is the single main road down the coast; drive times above are approximate and grow with traffic.
  • The ferry is the Isla Mujeres default: frequent Ultramar departures from Puerto Juarez and two Hotel Zone piers, children priced by height as above.

Book-ahead checklist

  • Chichen Itza: no official online ticket sale. The Boleto Unico is sold at the CATVI office on arrival, 697 MXN for foreign visitors. Arrive at opening; agencies get preferential attention 11:00-14:00.
  • Tulum ruins: 08:00-17:00, last entry 15:30, 210 MXN foreign visitors (INAH). Parque del Jaguar entry is free per the state government.
  • Isla Mujeres ferry: tickets are non-refundable but valid six months; arrive 30 minutes before departure; children priced by height.
  • Visitax: Quintana Roo's visitor tax, 285 MXN per person including children, paid online on the official site only.
  • Tours: the tours linked here cancel free up to 24 hours before, so book the weather-sensitive ones early and move them if the forecast turns.

FAQ

Is 7 days enough for the Riviera Maya with kids?

Yes, if you keep two bases instead of hotel-hopping. Four nights in Cancun plus three in Tulum covers the beach, Isla Mujeres, Chichen Itza, Tulum ruins and cenotes without a rushed day.

Can we buy Chichen Itza tickets online?

No. There is no official online sale. The Boleto Unico is sold only at the CATVI ticket office on arrival. Any website offering "official" Chichen Itza tickets online is a reseller.

Cancun or Tulum as the main base with kids?

Cancun for most of the week: bigger resorts with kids clubs, calm Hotel Zone swimming and the day trips that start there. Add Tulum for the last 2-3 nights for the ruins and cenotes instead of doing them as long day trips.

Do children pay the Visitax?

Yes. Quintana Roo's visitor tax is 285 MXN per person including children, payable online on the official Visitax site.
