Why five is hard
Hotel booking sites are built around families of four. Most standard rooms in Thailand list a maximum of two to four guests, and the search engine hides any room that does not fit your party. When you add a fifth person, many hotels disappear. The fix is to look for rooms built for larger groups, or to split the group in a way that works.
Here is what a few Thai hotels publish on their own sites. Capacity depends on the room, so treat these as examples of the range.
| Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Family Room | Up to 2 adults and 2 children (up to 11 years old) |
|---|---|
| Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Two-Bedroom Suites | Up to 6 guests |
| Chatrium Sathon Bangkok, 3-bedroom | 5 persons (studio or 1 bedroom: 2; 2 bedrooms: 4) |
| Centre Point Pattaya, Family Connecting Room | 66 sq m, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms |
| Grande Centre Point Space Pattaya, Space Connex | Up to 4 adults and 2 children |
Five ways to fit a group of five
1. Family rooms and connecting rooms
Two rooms joined by an internal door keep the group together with a door between parents and children. Centre Point Pattaya lists a Family Connecting Room with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in 66 sq m. Grande Centre Point Space Pattaya lists Space Connex for up to 4 adults and 2 children. Connecting rooms are usually subject to availability: Carlton Sukhumvit says so on its FAQ, and Chatrium Sathon says it has none. Ask before you book, and ask whether the rooms are guaranteed to connect.
2. Two ordinary rooms
Booking two standard rooms is the simplest way to search, and on many dates it is the cheapest. Use the "2 rooms" option in the search, put the adults and children in the split you want, and ask the hotel for rooms on the same floor or next to each other.
3. A two-bedroom suite or serviced apartment
Two-bedroom suites and apartments often give a kitchen, a living area and a single check-in. Carlton Sukhumvit lists its Two-Bedroom Suites for up to 6 guests, and Chatrium Sathon lists its 3-bedroom for 5 persons. Check the bed types: a sofa bed counts as a bed on paper but may not suit an older child.
4. A room with an extra bed
A room that fits four can sometimes take a fifth person with an extra bed, if the hotel allows it. Carlton Sukhumvit allows an extra bed on request, subject to availability, at THB 1,500++ per night for its Family Room. Chatrium Sathon lists an extra bed at THB 1,600 per night with breakfast. The hotel must confirm it first, because the booking site will not show it.
5. A villa or private pool house
In beach areas such as Koh Samui, Phuket and Pattaya, villas often sleep six or more. They cost more per night but replace two rooms, and the kitchen can cut food costs. Read the capacity on the listing and the cleaning and deposit terms.
How to search so the right rooms show up
- Enter the real party in the search: five guests, or the adults plus each child's age. Children's ages change which rooms and rates you see.
- Run the search twice: once as one room for all guests, once as two rooms. Compare the totals.
- Filter by family rooms, suites or apartments, and sort by the room's maximum occupancy, not by the star rating of the hotel.
- Open the room line, not only the hotel page. The room line shows how many people it sleeps and the bed types.
- If a hotel you like returns no room for five, write to the hotel. Some rooms, such as direct-booking suites, are not sold through the booking sites.
Extra beds and children: read the policy for each child
Child rules in Thailand change from hotel to hotel. Look at the age bands, whether breakfast is included, and whether the child must share an existing bed.
| Centre Point Pattaya, Family Connecting Room | One child below 12 years stays free using the existing bedding, excluding breakfast |
|---|---|
| Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit | Room only: children 0 to 11 stay free sharing a parent's bed. With breakfast: free from 0 to 5, a breakfast charge for ages 6 to 11. An extra bed is charged. |
| Chatrium Sathon Bangkok | Ages 0 to 6 free sharing existing bedding, breakfast included; ages 7 to 11 extra bed with breakfast THB 800 per person per night; age 12 and up THB 1,600 per person per night with breakfast |
Two points matter for a group of five. The free-child rule usually covers a child sharing an existing bed, so it does not make a third child free in a room where the beds are full. And some hotels cap the free places at one child per room.
What to ask the hotel before you pay
- Which room type fits five, and who sleeps in which bed?
- Is the extra bed or the child charge included in the price I see, and what is the total per night?
- Are the connecting rooms guaranteed to connect, or only requested?
- Does the price include breakfast for all five?
- Can you confirm all of this in writing, with the booking number?
Keep the hotel's reply with your booking. If the booking site lists a smaller occupancy than your party, the hotel's written confirmation is the document to show at check-in.
Price tips
- Compare the three layouts on your dates: two rooms, one connecting family room, one two-bedroom suite or apartment. The cheapest layout changes by season.
- Read the rate: Carlton lists its extra bed at THB 1,500++, so ask the hotel for the final total once the ++ is added.
- Add the extra bed per night, breakfast for each guest and any child charge before you compare totals.
- Check the cancellation terms before the price. A refundable rate is worth a small premium while you wait for the hotel to confirm the room plan.

Questions
Can five people share one hotel room in Thailand?
Sometimes, but most standard rooms list a maximum of two to four guests. Rooms that list five or more are usually family rooms, suites with two bedrooms or serviced apartments, so filter by the room's maximum occupancy, not by the hotel.
Do two adults and three children fit in a family room?
Not by default. Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit lists its Family Room for up to 2 adults and 2 children. Hotels with connecting rooms or two-bedroom suites are the usual fit for five.
What is the cheapest way to book a hotel for five in Thailand?
Compare three options for your dates: two standard rooms, one connecting family room and one two-bedroom suite or apartment. Add the extra bed fee, breakfast and taxes to each before you decide.
Do children stay free in Thai hotels?
Often, but with limits. Centre Point Pattaya says one child below 12 stays free on existing bedding without breakfast. Carlton Sukhumvit says children aged 0 to 11 stay free when sharing a parent's bed on a room-only rate (0 to 5 on a breakfast rate). The rule covers beds the child shares, not an extra bed, so confirm it for every child in your group.
Should I contact the hotel before booking for five?
Yes. Ask the hotel to confirm in writing the room type, who sleeps where, the extra bed or child charge and, for connecting rooms, that the rooms are guaranteed to connect.
